Curriculum

The teaching approach for Choosing the Best moves students from a cognitive understanding of the facts to a personal awareness. Lessons are structured to be taught in approximately 45 minute classes and incorporate videos, discussions, presentations, activities, personal application, and parent involvement. The courses can be used for in person, virtual, or hybrid class settings.

VIDEO OR CASE STUDY

DISCUSSION
Questions are posed to students about the video or case study allowing them to share perspectives and impressions while gaining new insights.
PRESENTATION
Key teaching points provide the facts students need to make informed decisions.
ACTIVITIES
Group activities, role-plays, and demonstrations involve students and allow them to apply the information in their own lives.
PERSONAL APPLICATION
Each student has the opportunity to make a personal application of the lesson topics at the end of each session.
PARENT INVOLVEMENT
Discussion questions are provided at the end of each lesson to facilitate parent-student communication. Additional parental resources are available.

Topics Covered

Relationship Education
Preventing sexual violence, the role of consent and help for victims, developing healthy vs. unhealthy friendships and relationships, and online safety.
Risks of Teen Sex
Emotional, STDs, and teen pregnancy.
Risk Reduction
Educating students on the benefits and limitations of contraception but always in the context of promoting sexual delay as the healthiest choice.
Risk Elimination
“Safe” or “Safer” sex, and contraception vs. sexual delay as the healthiest choice.
Rewards
Decision making & goal setting.
Risks of Teen Alcohol Use
Refusal Skills
Setting boundaries, developing verbal skills, and developing assertiveness skills.
